Sumo coaching levels in England
Who certifies coaches? Coaching certification for UK sumo is run by British Sumo, the national governing body — not by EnglandSumo. EnglandSumo actively encourages and supports people who want to coach sumo in England, and helps them connect with British Sumo's coaching pathway.
British Sumo describes three coaching levels for sumo in the UK, from assisting at practice up to master level. The summary below is based on British Sumo's 'Sumo Coaching Levels' framework. Exact award names, course dates, qualifications, and entry requirements change over time — always confirm the current pathway with British Sumo or EnglandSumo before booking a course.

The three levels at a glance
- Level 1 — Assistant Coach (Shidō-in, 指導員). Supports lead coaches, teaches beginners the fundamentals, and helps run safe, welcoming practice sessions. Assistant Coach — full checklist.

Level 1 — Assistant Coach (Shidō-in, 指導員)
An assistant coach works alongside lead coaches during keiko (稽古, practice sessions), helping to grow the sport from the ground up — often teaching new recruits (shin-deshi, 新弟子) the fundamentals.

Level 2 — Lead Coach (Fukushisho, 副師匠)
A lead coach runs a heya (部屋, stable) or training group independently — planning and delivering full programmes and mentoring the coaches around them.

Level 3 — Master Coach (Shisho, 師匠)
A master coach develops the next generation of coaches: overseeing the training and certification of Lead Coaches, refining curricula, and safeguarding standards across UK sumo.

A note on requirements
- Safeguarding and First Aid. Every level expects appropriate safeguarding and First Aid training, aligned with British Sumo and UK Coaching standards.
- Languages and titles. The Japanese titles (Shidō-in, Fukushisho, Shisho) come from the traditional sumo structure; the levels themselves are British Sumo's coaching framework.
- Check current details. The framework can be updated — confirm the current levels, course dates, and entry requirements before you commit.
How a coach is approved
Coaches or aspiring coaches are proposed to the British Sumo board via the EnglandSumo board, not proposed to British Sumo directly. The process is:
- Nominate. An existing coach or EnglandSumo official gives an aspiring coach's name to the EnglandSumo executive, together with the level they are aiming for.
- Propose. EnglandSumo adds an agenda item to the next British Sumo board meeting to approve the coaching certification.
- Convert. Once British Sumo's board approves, the new coach converts to the EnglandSumo coaching membership, which gives access to the first aid training, DBS checks, safeguarding education and coaching insurance they need.
Level 1 (Assistant Coach) is the level that can be proposed in advance of all the criteria being met — for example before First Aid is complete — so the outstanding items are completed through the coaching membership after approval. EnglandSumo coaching membership
To coach with EnglandSumo you need an EnglandSumo coaching membership — the membership you convert to once British Sumo's board approves your certification. The coaching membership includes:
- Coaching insurance for the sessions you run, under the group cover arranged through BMABA (the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association; see the FAQ on coaches and insurance for what the cover includes).
- DBS checks, processed through the coaching membership via BMABA.
- Education — safeguarding, First Aid and similar training sits within the coaching membership too.

For those coaching in England
EnglandSumo does not certify coaches — British Sumo does. What EnglandSumo can do is actively encourage and support people who want to coach sumo in England:
- Train with an affiliated club in England first, to build experience towards the Assistant Coach level.
- Email info@englandsumo.com to tell us you want to coach — an existing coach or EnglandSumo official will propose you to the EnglandSumo executive, and we'll point you at the current course pathway.
- Follow British Sumo for the certified coaching courses, course dates, and qualification details.
- Once British Sumo's board approves your certification, convert to the EnglandSumo coaching membership, which brings coaching insurance, DBS checks, and safeguarding and First Aid education.
- Start a sumo club in England if you are setting up a new venue and need a path to get coaching support in place.
