Before you start

A few things worth thinking through before you begin:

Step-by-step

  1. Talk to EnglandSumo and British Sumo early. Get in touch with EnglandSumo at info@englandsumo.com before you commit to a venue or schedule. Read the British Sumo About page and club directory, and ask existing England club leaders for advice. A short conversation early on saves a lot of time later.
  2. Find a suitable venue. You will need a sports hall, dojo, or matted training space large enough for a sumo dohyo (ring) (around 4.55 m diameter) plus a safety run-off area around it. A matted surface is strongly recommended so falls and step-outs stay safe.
  3. Sort out the basic equipment. For a beginner-friendly club you mainly need mats, a marked sumo circle (battle ropes or tape on mats works to start), and a first-aid kit. You may want to get lightweight mawashi (belts). Beginners can train in shorts and a T-shirt. Judo belts can be used for a start.
  4. Plan coaching, safeguarding, and first aid. Identify an experienced session lead and arrange first-aid cover. If you plan to teach under-18s, you will also need appropriate safeguarding and DBS checks. EnglandSumo and British Sumo can advise on what is expected and connect you to existing coaches.
  5. Arrange insurance. EnglandSumo provides insurance for coaches and individuals. Confirm exactly what cover your venue needs in writing before your first session.
  6. Affiliate the club through EnglandSumo. So that your club is listed in the official UK directory and your athletes sit on the recognised UK pathway, the club needs to affiliate through EnglandSumo to British Sumo. Coordinate via EnglandSumo for England-specific events, listings, and support.
  7. Make sure participants have EnglandSumo membership. For athletes in England, EnglandSumo membership is expected for participation in England training and competitions, and is required for selection to the England team at the European Sumo Championships. Make this part of your sign-up process from day one.
  8. Recruit members and run regular sessions. Open with taster sessions, university and gym tie-ins, and consistent social posts. Share details with EnglandSumo (info@englandsumo.com) so we can amplify them through our channels and the WhatsApp community, and add the club to the England list once it is up and running.
